The job of the Secret Service is to protect government officials. In recent years the job has become very dangerous. Over the past few years there have been many close calls.
For example, the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump, the January 6 capital riot, and most recently an attempted break-in at the Vice President’s house in Cincinnati, Ohio posed risks to Secret Service agents and their protectees. With the recent events there is a lot of concern for safety around the protection of government officials.
January 6, 2021, there was a violent attack on the US capital. It is seen as one of the most shocking breaches of security in recent years. Secret Service agents and capitol police worked together to protect the government employees.
As it became more dangerous the majority of people moved locations to stay safe. This event shocked the American public and showed how dangerous situations can happen unexpectedly.
While President Trump was campaigning in Pennsylvania in July of 2024, someone attempted to assassinate him.
According to WFYI, the Secret Service was already made aware of a suspicious person when the shots were fired.
When the shooting took place, agents urged Trump to “get down”.
Just a few months after that incident, there was another attempt on Trump’s life.
After these events, the Secret Service was under criticism for how close the danger was, but President Trump thanked the agents on X for their job of protecting him.
The most recent incident was about two weeks ago on Monday January 5, 2026, when there was a reported break in at vice President JD Vance’s home.
There are not a whole lot of details about the incident, but according to the individual charged with damaging government property, engaging in physical violence and assaulting federal officers.
The result of this shows how the threats for political figures are everywhere and can be targeted anywhere.
The threats are not always noticeable, which adds more pressure to the Secret Service and anyone who helps with the safety of the United States leaders because even when they are trying their best it’s not an easy job.
There is a lot of tension revolving around politics.
The role of the Secret Service is very important as political violence is rising. These incidents remind the people of the United States that protecting leaders is not a simple job even with trained professionals, the job still has its challenges.
