Somethin or Nothin: Students discuss tips for the upcoming Ohio AIR tests

[Intro music plays]

Kennedy: Welcome to Somethin or Nothin Podcast episode two! And we’re talking about air tests. And, my name’s Kennedy.

Sidney: I’m Sidney.

Trent: I’m Trent.

[Intro music fades]

Kennedy: I think or, it’s April.

Sidney: I think it’s April…ish. But um, should we start with getting a good breakfast?

Trent: Eggs are really good. Um…

Sidney: Bagels?

Trent: Yeah.

Sidney: Toast? Waffles?

Kennedy: I don’t really eat breakfast.

Sidney: I don’t ever eat breakfast.

Kennedy: But, it actually does help.

Sidney: I always eat breakfast before my AIR test.

Trent: Like, a granola bar would be good.

Sidney: No, just anything.

Trent: Anything? Oh, ok. Um, also go to bed at a reasonable time, make sure you’re getting at least eight hours of sleep. I don’t do that usually, so um, [Sidney says “Neither do I”] don’t copy me, but you should definitely go to bed early if you want to be more prepared for AIR testing.

Sidney: Yeah, some of them are important to like, to graduate.

Kennedy: They’re actually not that hard though. Like, I really like when you have AIR tests, cause… [Sidney says “no like the day is messed up, but like in a good way”] the schedule changed and they’re not that hard actually. So… yeah.

Kennedy: Basically, if you’re worried about the AIR test, the best way to do, to prepare for it, is do the practice test that the Ohio Testing Portal offers, cause, they’re just past tests, that have like, changed questions, but have all the features, that like a regular test would have, and they’re really great to prepare for if you’re worried about how you’re gonna do on a regular test.

Sidney: You should also have a good mindset, because, if you think you’re gonna do good, then you’re gonna do good!

Kennedy: Maybe.

Sidney: Ok, Kennedy. [says it with sass] Anyways, just have a good mindset and it will all be…

Kennedy: Ok. next…

[sparkles sound effect]

Sidney: Oooh, sparkles!

Kennedy: Ok next, I’m going to go over, um, the functions that the test has, that can help, um when you’re doing the test, and if you’re doing a practice test and all the features.

[eerie sound effect]

Kennedy: Fancy noise.

Sidney: Fancy!

Kennedy: Ok, first of all the, um… the AIR test has the text-to-speech option, which is really helpful if you’re, um… if you don’t wanna read, honestly, but, it can actually be really helpful, my brother, I know uses it a lot, it’s really helpful, if you need help with the reading, specifically, and I haven’t personally used it, cause I don’t like hearing it, but it can be really helpful. Next, my favorite tool is the notes, cause um, especially for the English test, talking notes is really important, if you want to keep your thoughts orderly, and uh, especially for the writing pieces, which, uh most of these tools are in the top corner, or whatever, but they’re also really nice, and make sure to pace yourself during the test, I am not very good at pacing myself, and I always do the writing piece on the English test specifically at the, like, the very last second and, it’s not as good as I would’ve liked it to be.

Sidney: Personally, I get really good scores on my AIR test, and I’m like done in the first hour.

[applause]

Sidney: Also, I’m not sure but, do you need a book? [inaudible] No, you can probably do whatever you want honestly.

Kennedy: But, I like reading.

Sidney: Ok, Kennedy.

Trent: I think you’re alone on that one.

Kennedy: Ok, well that’s lame. Yeah, also the timer is there to scare you on the test. You’re actually fine.

Trent: Usually, you’ll have more than enough time to complete the test.

Kennedy: Yeah, and however many tests you have, it’s okay, cause, those are just more tests where you don’t have school work. So, yippee for that. But are there any more things you guys have to say about the AIR tests coming up?

Sidney: Um, I don’t think so.

Trent: Just have a good mindset and… [Sidney interrupts]

Sidney: Just remember you’re in highschool now so, there’s not many of these left that you have to take. You’ve almost graduated, technically.

Kennedy: Yeah and bring mints, cause…

Sidney: What?

Kennedy: Bring mints! Cause I really like mints.

Trent: Yeah bring Andes Mints.

Kennedy: What? No, like the peppermint ones.

Trent: [awkward silence] Like the Lifesaver ones?

Sidney: No like… [mumbles about some peppermint candy]

Trent: I’ve never heard of soft mints.

Sidney: No, they’re my favorite.

[cricket chirps]

Sidney: [reacting to the sound] No, stop.

Kennedy: Okay, I think that’s all we have about the AIR test, but I hope that these tips can help you a little bit, and goodbye.

Sidney: Bye!

Trent: Bye!
