Summer is just around the corner. Calming sunsets, nostalgic playlists, and lively volunteer camps – summer is the best season to have fun and be productive.

But instead of doing the usual activities and hobbies, some students make the mistake of doomscrolling summer away.

Scrolling all summer along is a true waste of time. Everyone dreams to have an exciting memorable summer, but being on your phone the whole time isn’t going to help you achieve that.

There are so many opportunities and things to do during the summer, here are a few suggestions on what to do during the summer instead of doomscrolling.

The best way to make your summer productive is finding ways to build resumés and find ways to help the community around you.

Alexandria Harris, a college advisor at PHS, says, “I think tapping into your own immediate community to see if there’s opportunities for, you know, babysitting, landscaping, bookkeeping, filing, seeing if you can assist with that.”

Helping your community by volunteering and utilizing your talents to help the community can be a great way to spend your time.

Starting your own business looks amazing on a college resumé and is a great way to earn money over the summer.

Instead of being on your phone all summer long, try picking up some new hobbies that would interest you, whether it’s crocheting, or picking up a new instrument, or even drawing. There are so many ways to spend your time outside of your phone, especially when you have a lot more free time.

Creating your own passion projects, whether it’s creating a film/documentary, or designing a new app is summer activity that might have been put away all school year. Passion projects also help with resumés.

Summer may also feel lonely at times, it’s tempting to get on your phone and scroll.

A quote from Psychology Today says, “Escaping our loneliness or helplessness by watching the world from afar, we can end up feeling even lonelier and more helpless.”

Instead of watching other people’s lives and how fun their summer is going, the best thing is get off your phone and try to achieve that summer for yourself.

Whether it is putting yourself out there by joining a nonprofit, or hanging out with family and friends. You can be happy by doing simple things that bring you joy.

Summer can also be hard for students that benefit from school resources. (Link Arabella’s article here).

Lastly, just enjoying the summer weather, biking, running. Having fun in the sun can benefit mental health and help you stay off your phone.

These are a few ways to accomplish a summer you’ll never forget.

Relaxing as well as helping your community, and taking care of your mental health is the best way to enjoy your summer (without a phone).
