The repeat diving champion wasn’t always a diver.

Trevor Madigan, a junior, used to be a gymnast. He spent his days practicing and keeping up with his family norm. His parents and sister were also gymnasts. Everyone did the same sport, then, he suffered a career ending injury.

Not being able to perform his former abilities of being a gymnast, he found another calling.

Trevor’s coach, who doubled as a gymnast and diver, was a big help to him. Diving was a great alternative for Trevor; it focused on landing into water and not on feet, which was his issue. His coach supported him.

In 8th grade, Madigan started diving at the Perrysburg pool. A year later is when he started at the BGSU diving club.

He practices four times a week in two hour intervals. Apart from that, he also lifts each morning for an hour, waking up at six a.m..

Closer to competitions, he tends to practice his dives more, with more repetition.

To maintain a healthy lifestyle for diving, nutrition is a key factor. Trevor eats a balanced diet with room for a lot of fruits and vegetables. Cutting any sugary drinks (like sodas) is a big part of his diet as well.

Due to the physical demand of his routines and dives, Madigan says LiquidIV is what works best to refuel.

Trevor sees himself diving in the future. He is committed to Minnesota for diving.

He wants to continue to train hard and achieve his place in the Olympics, which has been his dream since he was young. He wants to make himself proud to look back on all the work he’s done.

But, Trevor’s journey wasn’t perfect. When he first started diving, it was a big shift. He didn’t immediately adapt to the shift with the workloads of school as well, and says he felt unmotivated during his freshman year.

His passion for diving pulled him out of that. When he was tired mentally, diving grabbed him out, and he found happiness.

Trevor says his favorite thing about diving is, “I get to be in the water, I love swimming, I love being outside, I love competing.”

Overall, Trevor says that diving for him is exciting, “You’re nervous but excited at the same time,” he said.
