When you think about olympics, you do not think about high-schoolers competing. Here comes the Blaze!
Marcus Blaze was actually the wrestling champion for the U17 world championship.
When eSomethin asked Blaze about how he felt about recently competing in the Olympic trials, Blaze said it “felt special” to compete.
Blaze also said that his goal was to “win the olympics and to get better at wrestling and life and being the best version of yourself in that process.”
Though Blaze finished third at the Olympic wrestling trials, he still made a name for himself on the world’s stage.
Taylor Rogers, who works with Blaze in the Athletics Department, said that Blaze making the Olympic trials is “incredible, also not surprising. [Blaze is] extremely hard-working, extremely talented.
Rogers also said that he would tell Blaze “don’t forget your drive.”
Rogers added that “it would be cool to see Marcus recognized more.”
Braxton Mefferd, a friend of Blaze, said that Blaze is a “cool friend. I know how much hard work he puts into wrestling.”
Brian Whitner, the high school’s wrestling coach said that “it was a great opportunity for Marcus to see that he was with the best people in the country with wrestling, so that reinforces the beliefs of the wrestling coaches that Marcus could wrestle with the best people ”.
He also said that Blaze should “Embrace and appreciate all the opportunities he’s being given, appreciate his god-given talent, be able to appreciate the opportunities that are in front of him, what he has earned by doing things the right way”.
He says about Blaze that he’s “Always been very humble”.
Whitner said that it was “kinda what we expected from him, we thought he would be able to compete, that he is able to be right where he needs to be, he is able to continuously grow.” Whitner also says that Blaze is “making the wrestling team more heard.”
When asked if Whitner had anything else to say he said that “we’re really proud of Marcus.”
