On Friday, January 18th, the girls varsity basketball team beat Anthony Wayne in a very exciting game. The cheering crowd was on the edge of their seats as Perrysburg started off behind in the first half, but regained their confidence and finished strong with a successful win.
Player #13, Kylie Griggs, describes the game as intense and aggressive. She gives credit to her team: “When we came out, right after third quarter,” Griggs says, “we turned up on defense and got steals and made free throws.”
By the end of the first half, the Lady Jackets were losing to the Generals. However, Perrysburg rebounded in the third quarter and was determined to win.
“We just came out [in the second half]…and matched their intensity and played very hard and came out on top,” Griggs said.
The girls varsity coach, Todd Sims, described the game as intense as well: “I thought we were flat in the beginning,” he says. “We didn’t play very well in the first half at all, but…I thought we had an excellent third quarter…which ended up getting us over the hump…so we’ll take it.”
As for the overall atmosphere of the game, both Griggs and Coach Sims described the setting as energetic and exciting. Sims pointed out how much he enjoys the girl-boy double-headers because of the increase in attendance and the great energy coming from the student section.
Coach Sims told us, “I don’t know if I would do anything different, but we have got to understand that we’ve been pretty good here for years and that we’re going to give other teams a really really good game. They’re really going to focus when they play us, so hopefully we learn that lesson.”
