Did you know that you can start your legal career while in high school?
Our school has a Mock Trial club that prepares participants with a variety of employable skills like public speaking and debate. According to Ohio’s Mock Trial website, “students participate in an original, unscripted simulated trial written by attorneys. High school students argue both sides of the case in real court rooms across the state.”
This year, freshman Avnish Shengde is the Attorney of the Year.
When eSomethin reached out to Shengde, he said the distinction was “unexpected”, he felt that it was a “pleasant surprise.” He says he plans to do Mock Trial again, saying it’s “fun.”
Shengde said that he may run for an officer position next year. He also tells eSomethin that his friends and family were proud of his accomplishments.
As a four-year participant of Mock Trial, President Carter Harrold said he feels “really happy” and he believes that Shengde’s hard work has paid off. He recommends Shengde to keep the “same work ethic, work hard, be prepared”.
Harrold said that Shendge’s victory is symbolic. “Anybody can do Mock Trial” regardless of starting experience, he said. Harrold was happy to see Shengde succeed as a freshman.
According to Harrold, “all of our attorneys performed well this year. Avnish’s hard work paid off.” Harrold believes that Shengde’s victory sets a standard for continued excellence of the Mock Trial program and he said that “we all have to succeed to keep up with him.”
