The word “new” can be used to describe the 2022-2023 school year for numerous reasons. After two years of hybrid and mask-mandated learning, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s less restrictive school environment is a new feeling for the community. In addition, Perrysburg High School is welcoming a new class of freshmen and many new staff members.
Science teacher Savannah Schumm is one of the many new faces at PHS.
Schumm teaches chemistry and an elective science course, Science in Society, which is a new course at PHS designed for “students who don’t feel like they’re destined for like chemistry or physics.”
She is from the Columbus area and realized that she was very talented in science in her youth. Although she understood science, she never truly loved it. However, she loves people, and was able to find interest in helping others understand what comes to her naturally.
“When I went into college,” Schumm said, “I knew I wanted to be able to combine something I was talented in with being able to help people…being able to explain [a topic] to someone who maybe thinks they can’t do it, and helping them along the way to hopefully get to the point that they can do it, is really important to me, and has been something that I really enjoy.”
Schumm said her favorite thing about teaching is actually getting to meet people, and that all of her students are very different from each other.
Future in Perrysburg
Schumm said she applied for the position in Perrysburg because she wanted a change. She explained that PHS feels like a big school, and that it has been one of her goals “to go to a school that just has such a variety of people, personalities and things like that.”
“I had a lot of respect [for Perrysburg] and a lot of the things I heard about Perrysburg were nothing but positive.”
Schumm also mentioned that meeting the other staff members was a positive experience that set the tone for the year.
Schumm is excited for the years to come at PHS and is striving to stay open-minded to ensure she can learn as much as possible.
“Just as much as I’m here to teach information, I want to take in as much as I can, and I’m really excited for that.”
