On January 20, Donald Trump held his second Inauguration at the U.S. Capital Where he took the Oath of office from being elected president. During the event, Mariann Budde, the Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Washington gave a speech.
She said “Let me make one final plea Mr.President,” during Trump’s inaugural prayer service. Budde’s speech included talking about having mercy for children and families.
Budde said “In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people of our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children, Democratic, Republican, and independent families. Some who fear for their lives.”
She continued talking about immigrant families – how the majority are not criminals but good neighbors who pay their taxes. Many who are a part of communities and churches. Budde further explained how children will now have their parents taken away from them.
Budde’s plea asked for mercy from Donald Trump. Trump had a more critical response. He called her “a radical left hard line Trump hater” and characterized Budde as “not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology.”
Budde’s plea caused a wave of responses. Some think that she should have never asked Trump to have mercy or she came off rude. But others strongly agree with Budde.
A Tiktok video over the Bishop had comments that were criticizing her speech. A user Omalgal said, “Such an ignorant sermon, this is a bishop, she’s an embarrassment, not only herself but the church she represents.”
Another user BirdDad said, “Exactly why a woman should be silent in church.”
Someone that agreed with Budde’s speech was Beatrice Hudson, a student at Perrysburg High School said, “I agree with what the Bishop said. I feel like Trump should’ve had that warning that people are going to be scared, because people are scared.”
Hudson said that the Bishop doesn’t owe anyone an apology because she’s entitled to her opinion and that Trump should be happy that he got elected again.
After the inauguration, Marianne Budde was rumored that she would be removed from her position on Facebook and X. Later proven that rumor is false. Her church sees her as a valued and trusted pastor that stands by Bishop Budde.
Meanwhile Donald Trump gave his own speech at the inauguration where he stated the “Golden age” for America starts now. During the speech he gave out promises, talked about the immigration policy and economic issues.
There were many known faces at the inauguration like Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Carrie Underwood singing to celebrate Trump.
Both Donald Trump and Marianne Budde got a range of responses from the media. But the bishop won’t be giving an apology for asking for mercy.
