On October 21, Perrysburg High School started another successful spirit week!
Various students loved different aspects of Spirit Week.
Momina Gill, a freshman, said that she loved dressing up, and “connecting with people you don’t even know.”
Elena Fuentes, a sophomore, liked “days where [students] can dress up really extravagantly.”
As for favorite costumes, Fuentes and Hudsyn Schlatter, a senior, agreed that they enjoyed Character Day, and Fuentes loved “Anything But A Backpack” Day.
Gill would like to see “Anything But A Backpack” Day and Decade Day in the future.
Spirit Week at the high school and spirit week at the junior high look very different. Gill said that “the amount of people [she sees] dressed up for [high school] spirit weeks is great, but at the junior high, it was so miniscule.”
At the high school, Class of 2025 won spirit week every year that they have been in school. Schlatter said that “there’s definitely a lot of pressure [to dress up]” and that the seniors are “all very competitive and [they] want to keep the title up.”
Additionally Gill said that she has noticed a “flip in the expected dynamic,” because there are a lot of freshmen dressing up, but not as many upperclassmen.
Each year, the school’s Pride Club gets together to choose the themes. Schlatter explains the process as a way that represents the student body, but the Pride Club executives get the final say. Everyone picks four to five favorite themes, and it’s narrowed down from there.
Like most things, the Spirit week themes face some backlash, but Schlatter says that “[they] are always told to leave it alone and that there is nothing [they] can do about it.” Rather than get frustrated about complaints, Pride Club is told to encourage people to dress up, and just be proud about what they accomplished.
Congrats to the class of 2025 for winning Spirit Week yet again!
